Pacific Palisades, Calif. (Tuesday, August 5, 2008) – The 2008 W-League Champion Pali Blues Soccer Club was notified by the USL league office that three players have been selected to the 2008 All-Tournament Team after having superior performances this past weekend in Virginia Beach. Along with Championship MVP Amy LePeilbet, forward Danesha Adams and defender Kandace Wilson got the nod for tournament accolades.
LePeilbet, who played every minute this season for the Blues, scored an emotional equalizer in the 83rd minute of the W-League Championship game on Saturday. She also played outstanding on the defensive end of the field in both matches of the weekend, a 2-0 win over the Washington Freedom in the semifinals along with the 2-1 victory in the finals against the FC Indiana Lionesses.
“What can you say about Amy?” Blues head coach Charlie Naimo commented about the Arizona State product. “All you have to do is watch her play for five minutes and you say to yourself, ‘THAT is a winner.’ No accolade can give Amy the credit she deserves- just a fantastic player and person.”
Adams, the Blues leader in points (19) and goals (8) this season, had a dominating offensive performance in the semifinal contest against Washington. The UCLA alumna knocked in both goals in the 2-0 win and nearly had a third notch. She followed that match-up with a great performance in the finals, buckling down and giving a fantastic defensive effort to preserve the victory in the waning minutes of regulation.
“I am happy that ‘D’ was able to pull through some late season injuries to come up big for us these last two games,” Naimo stated. “The team will never forget her two goals in the semi, but I will never forget how she defended in the final stages of the final; that was heroic.”
Wilson led the Women’s Premier Soccer League in scoring last season with 15 goals in nine games, but the Cal State Fullerton native mostly played on the defensive end for the Blues this season. In need of an offensive spark in the championship, Naimo moved Wilson up top in hopes that the versatile Wilson could create an opportunity. The switch paid off, and in the 88th minute, Wilson delivered a perfectly chipped cross over the face of the goal, and Italian striker Ilaria Pasqui headed the ball home to give the Blues the W-League title.
“It is great to see our players get recognition,” Naimo said. “Kandace has been Miss Versatility all year, and she proved that in the final.”
Heading into the offseason, many players on the Blues roster look to crack into the new Women’s Professional Soccer league. Stay tuned to www.bluessoccerclub.com to keep an eye on what your favorite Blues player does next.
