Centennial, Colo. (Sunday, June 7, 2008) - The Pali Blues Soccer Club (5-0-0) picked up a second win over a conference foe in three days today when they defeated the Real Colorado Cougars (2-1-1) by a count of 5-1. Forward Katy Cross led the Blues attack by netting a first half hat trick.
"We played our best half of the season today in the second half, which is a really good sign," Blues head coach Charlie Naimo commented. "After a slow start, we only allowed one shot in the second half."
One player that did not have a slow start was Cross. The Ivy-League graduate completed her hat trick only 32 minutes into the match-up. Her first goal came in just the second minute when she scored a feed from UCLA product Jill Oakes. After Nicole Lukens hit the equalizer for Real Colorado in the 7th minute, Cross put her team back on top by finishing a ball from Italian forward Ilaria Pasqui. She hit a solo strike in the 32nd minute to complete the first half scoring.
The second half would see the Blues play an inspiring 45 minutes of the beautiful game. After Kendall Fletcher was taken down in the box in the 66th minute, she capitalized by finding the back of the net on the ensuing penalty kick. Former Sun Devil Liz Bogus finalized the score in the 83rd minute when she struck a Rosie Tantillo ball.
With the 5-1 victory, the Blues set up a critical two-game set with the second place Vancouver Whitecaps. The Blues host the Whitecaps next Sunday before crossing the border to play Vancouver on their home field the following Sunday.
